A man by the name of John Neely Bryan is considered the father of the area that would later become Dallas. It was in 1839 that he first came upon the area while surveying for a possible trading post serving settlers and the native Indian population. He chose this place because it was the logical location to cross the Trinity, and because it was close to the where a highway would link Texas, north to south- known as the Preston Trail. Three years later, upon Bryan’s invitation, other settlers came to the area and a new settlement was born. Apparently, Bryan began referring to the area as Dallas in deference of a close friend of his. It’s doubtful any of those early settlers had any idea what the area they founded would one day become. Today, the Dallas-Fort Worth area combines to form the largest metropolitan center in the state.
